What is LEV?

Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) is a way of controlling and reducing the exposure of workers to dust, fumes and vapour which could be hazardous to their health. For example, a manufacturing process may have localised extraction hoods connected with ductwork to a fan and filter which transports contaminated air away from the workers before discharging it into the atmosphere.

Why do I need LEV testing?

It is a legal requirement, as set out in the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, for any employer to maintain working conditions for employees. Any employer that uses LEV techniques in the workplace must have equipment examined and tested every 14 months to ensure it is working effectively and safely.

What does LEV testing involve?

Using our years of expertise and experience, we will undertake a thorough examination of equipment including hoods, filters and ducts, measure the technical performance using state-of-the-art equipment and assess the effectiveness of the LEV system. We will make recommendations and can even order parts for any repair work. All work is carried out according to strict regulations which govern LEV testing.

What regulations exist for LEV testing?

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) set out guidelines for LEV testing in the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH). In addition to this our engineers hold the BOHS P601 'Commissioning and Thorough Examination and Testing of Local Exhaust Ventilation Systems', which the HSE guidance (HSG258) refers to as one measure of competency in this area. LEV Testing Ltd pays close attention to both sets of regulations for any examination, maintenance or repair work we undertake.
